Double Nighttime Ski Spectacle Returns in 2024

06/09/2023

Following its successful world premiere last year, the Schladming Planai will once again host nighttime editions of Alpine Ski World Cup races on January 23rd and 24th, 2024. The program will feature both a Giant Slalom and Slalom, though the order of the races has been shuffled: This time around, the Night Giant Slalom will kick off the event, followed by the now iconic night slalom, "The Nightrace", on January 24th.

Praise for a Stellar World Premiere

When the Giant Slalom originally scheduled for Garmisch-Partenkirchen in January 2023 had to be cancelled, Schladming stepped in as the replacement venue. For many, this represented a dream come true. The region had long envisioned a Night Giant Slalom on the Planai, complementing the legendary Nightrace. This vision was realized on January 25th, 2023. Bringing this dream to fruition required the dedication of countless volunteers. The floodlighting system was even temporarily extended 350 meters farther up the mountain. After its successful debut, the Night Giant Slalom garnered praise from all corners, securing its spot on the 2023/24 Ski World Cup calendar.

Giant Slalom First, Followed by Slalom

The order of the two races on the Planai has been swapped. The primary reason relates to the necessary preparations of the race pistes, barriers, safety netting, and the stands for spectators. A Giant Slalom course, along with its required crash zones, needs to be significantly wider than a Slalom course. That said, from a technical standpoint, it's far simpler to hold the Giant Slalom first, and then reconfigure for the narrower Slalom piste the following night, rather than vice versa.

The Program

  • Wednesday, January 24th, 2024 – World Cup Night Slalom "The Nightrace"
